Peru National Day 2018
This Doodle’s Key Themes
On July 28th, people from around Peru start their celebrations for las Fiestas Patrias - one of the biggest national holidays in the country, and also Peru's National Day. People take the streets and Plazas de Armas to celebrate the liberation of Peru from Spain, in 1821.
The main event is a speech held by the president, which goes over the state of the nation and is followed by a mass led by the Archbishop of Lima. The capital also hosts a celebration of its own, with a flag-raising ceremony and parades taking the streets.
Today's Doodle depicts the Peruvian flag, with its red and white stripes and coat of arms featuring important symbols of Peru: its national animal the vicuña, a cinchona tree representing the national flora, and a cornucopia representing its mineral resources and prosperity.
Happy national day, Peru!
