About the Waitangi Day 2024 Doodle

This Doodle honors Waitangi Day, the national day of Aotearoa (the Māori name for New Zealand). The artwork was illustrated by Canterbury-based guest artist Vincent Egan of Māui Studios and depicts whānau and friends celebrating at a kapa haka festival.

Q: Why was this topic meaningful to you personally?

A: This topic is meaningful to me because it speaks of the people in Te Ika ā Māui, and Te Waipounamu, of New Zealand. This topic speaks of an important series of historic moments in this country, and is a perfect opportunity to depict the different personalities of our collective home, in a style that resonates deeply with me and the communities we serve at Māui Studios.

Q: What were your first thoughts when you were approached about the project?

A: It was encouraging to see that Google is interested in celebrating and supporting Waitangi Day in this way, by seeking talented local artists. I'm often inspired by the work Hori Te Ariki Mataki's, which appeared last year, and I felt honoured that Google would approach my team and I with this project.

Q: Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle?

A: Absolutely! Each character combines traits and attributes of people I know or have interacted with at different events I've attended, whether it's kapa haka cultural performances, mau rākau weaponry workshops, or annual tribal celebrations.

Q: What message do you hope people take away from your Doodle?

A: Definitely the message of kotahitanga, the importance of unity, and a celebration of our collective cultures here in New Zealand. It’s my intention that this piece is a tohu or symbol of how awesome we are as a people when we come together, and look out for each other.
