About the Doodle

About Veterans Day 2025

This hand painted Doodle celebrates Veterans Day, a day to honor all who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Doodle was created by Florida-based, Navy veteran guest artist, Kristin Cronic. The artwork is centered on the theme of “coming home,” depicting a commemoration wall in a veteran’s home. Each item featured on the shelf holds meaning:

G: House plants represent a piece of home

O: Good Conduct Medals are awarded for exemplary behavior and fidelity across all six military branches

O: The American flag folded 13 times in the shape of a tricorn hat honors the legacy of military service

G: The red poppy is a worldwide symbol to remember military lives lost

L: The bald eagle symbolizes strength, freedom, and power

E: Military challenge coins represent camaraderie and honor

The tradition of commemoration walls reminds us of our national promise to support veterans long after their military service is complete.

Q: What was your creative process for this Doodle artwork?

A: I began this Doodle with reflection on what "home" means to a veteran. Home is a place, but its also the small moments: coffee on Saturday morning, a passing touch from a loved one, blankets on love seats, failing again to grow tomatoes, but grateful to be home long enough to try.

My experience as a veteran is what led me to cherish these moments. They aren’t mundane, they are the very treasures that make the living worth it. It was watching them from afar while on active duty that made me realize exactly how precious they are. Outside of the community of people, the best thing I took with me after serving was a deep contentment with the every day. I aimed to convey that in a still life of objects one might find in a military home, where service and everyday life are integrated.

Q: Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle? Are there specific elements of the artwork that have symbolic meaning?

A: The main "G" is a house plant, a simple object while also carrying a deep connotation in a home.

When I was in the Navy, I craved a sense of rootedness that I missed while being at sea for months at a time. As a direct response to that feeling, plant life is a significant motif in my work.

For a plant to be that lush and thriving, there has to be someone at home tending to it. That plant represents more than just a plant, it's all of the things families tend to while a service member is away.
