Uzbekistan Independence Day 2021
Today’s Doodle celebrates Uzbekistan’s Independence Day, known in local Uzbek as Mustaqillik Kuni. On this day in 1991, the landlocked Central Asian nation established its independence.
Throughout the nation, Independence Day is celebrated with traditional music, dance, cultural exhibitions, and offerings of local food. The grandest of these celebrations is hosted in Tashkent, the capital and largest city in Central Asia. In the heart of the historic capital, green paths surround Independence Square, which is a central thoroughfare of Tashkent that traditionally hosts today’s most extravagant celebrations. Local artisans populate a bustling fair while folk musicians and dance troupes converge in the square for elaborate performances in traditional Uzbek style.
A proper Uzbek feast complements the lively cultural events around the country. And, what better dish to serve than the national staple of plov? This traditional meal of rice, mutton, onions, and grated carrots can be found cooking in most homes as citizens reflect on the achievements of the nation’s independence movement and look toward the future.
Happy Independence Day, Uzbekistan!
