About Uruguayan Independence Day 2025
This annual Doodle celebrates Uruguayan Independence Day. On this day in 1825, the Florida Congress declared the independence of the Eastern Province from the Brazilian Empire, after more than 300 years under foreign rule.
On Independence Day, Uruguayans attend lively music and dance concerts, parades, and firework shows to express admiration for their country. Tango is especially popular on this holiday, as many of the genre’s early influencers and musicians were Uruguayan. People gather with family and friends at asados (barbecues) to enjoy the day with delicious food and drink.
