Uruguay Independence Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Uruguay Independence day in honor of the date in 1825 when the nation officially declared its autonomy from Brazil.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the flag of this South American nation, which features horizontal stripes of light blue and white and the golden Sun of May on its canton. On May 25, 1810, the sun is said to have burst through the clouds during a critical turning point for the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata–the territory that included present-day Uruguay–in its fight to break free from Spain.
The Sun of May is immortalized on Uruguay’s flag to represent the nation’s sovereignty, which officially arrived more than 15 years later on this day in 1825, when the country declared its independence from the subsequent ruling power of Brazil.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia, Uruguay!
