Turkey National Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle honors Turkey’s Republic Day, one of the nation’s most important holidays. On this day in 1923, the Turkish parliament (called the Grand National Assembly) amended its constitution to establish the Republic of Turkey.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is Turkey’s iconic First Grand National Assembly of Turkey Building, which housed the parliament from 1920 and 1924 and served as the site of the nation’s historic declaration of independence. Located in Turkey’s capital city of Ankara, the building was constructed in a traditional Turkish architectural style featuring the prominent use of Ankara stone, or andesite.
Since its stately beginnings, the monument has been repurposed multiple times, and today commemorates Turkey’s history as the War of Independence Museum (Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi).
Happy Republic Day, Turkey!
