Tunisia National Day 2016
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Happy Independence Day, Tunisia!
Today's Doodle depicts the Sbeitla, or Roman ruins of Sufetula in Tunisia. These historic and excellently preserved temples reflect the richness and complexity of Tunisia's history. On the southern coast of the Mediterranean, this country historically had close ties to France and Italy. Modern-day Tunisia's vibrant and eclectic culture are a product of its role in history as a gateway between the Arab world and Europe.
The three temples shown in today's Doodle were built for ancient Roman deities Minerva, Jupiter, and Juno. Usually, there is only one temple built to serve all three divinities, but Sbeitla is an exception. Each temple is designed to complement the others and were built as a functional unit. Like Tunisia itself, the different influences come together to make something powerful — and built to last.
