Tanzania Independence Day 2023
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Tanzania Independence Day. On this day in 1961, the East African nation officially became sovereign. After declaring independence, Tanganyika and the island of Zanzibar combined territories to form a new country, Tanzania.
Independence Day kicks off in Dar es Salaam where crowds gather for a flag-raising ceremony — like the one in today’s Doodle. Tanzania’s national flag features a diagonal back stripe outlined by yellow, dividing green and blue triangles. It represents mineral and agricultural wealth and the Indian Ocean. After speeches and seminars from government officials, crowds line the street as soldiers and military vehicles parade through the heart of the city.
While some might attend concerts featuring cultural dances at the national stadium, others spend the day with family and friends. It’s popular to enjoy national delicacies like ugali — dough combined with cornmeal, and cassava flour, served with fish and meat.
Happy Independence Day, Tanzania!
