About St. David's Day
This Doodle celebrates St. David’s Day in Wales, a time to celebrate its rich culture and heritage. On this day in the year 589, St. David was canonised and became the patron saint of Wales.
Across the country, towns and cities hold parades and cultural events to celebrate. The National Parade goes through the center of Cardiff, where schoolchildren and bands march in traditional Welsh costumes, including aprons, red gowns, and tall black hats. Spectators often carry the flag of St. David, which is black with a yellow cross through the middle. Some also wave the Welsh flag, which features a red dragon with a white and green background. The red dragon — as seen in the Doodle artwork — has been a symbol of Welsh pride since its victory in a dragon battle that brought peace and allowed for the construction of the castle.
The leek and the daffodil are also prominent symbols of this Welsh celebration, both often worn on lapels or used as decor. Leeks are significant because it’s believed that St. David survived on only them and water, and daffodils because it’s the national flower.
After a day of festivities, friends and family enjoy delicious food like steaming bowls of Cawl (lamb and vegetable soup) and welsh cakes.
Channel your inner St. David and “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” – meaning “do the little things” in life today. Happy St. David's Day! Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
