Sri Lanka Independence Day 2024
Today’s annual Doodle celebrates Independence Day 2024 in Sri Lanka! On this day in 1948, the South Asian island country gained its political independence after more than five centuries of colonial rule.
Sri Lankans led a number of movements and legislative actions to achieve their freedom and self-governance. The Sri Lanka Independence Movement was a political initiative that educated the middle-class and encouraged a peaceful transfer of power. In 1944, many of the nation’s brightest also formed the Soulbury Commission to create a variety of new constitutional and legal reforms. Other notable events include the Ceylon National Congress, Donoughmore Commission, and more.
On Independence Day, people across the country attend parades, dance performances, and public ceremonies to honor the nation’s rich history, notable achievements, and bright future. The main celebration occurs in the capital, Colombo, where crowds gather to watch the Sri Lankan flag fly high in the sky — like in today’s artwork.
Happy Independence Day, Sri Lanka!
