About South Korea Liberation Day 2025
This annual Doodle celebrates National Liberation Day, also known as gwangbokjeol (광복절), in South Korea. On this day in 1945, the nation gained its independence after 35 years under foreign rule.
On National Liberation Day, South Korean citizens attend parades, concerts, and official ceremonies across the country. Streets and homes are decorated with the white, black, red, and blue South Korean flag, or the taegeukgi — just like the one in today’s artwork. Cheonan’s Independence Hall is a popular destination on this holiday, drawing crowds to its museum dedicated to Korean history.
