Singapore National Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Singapore’s National Day and 55 years of autonomy for the Southeast Asian nation. On this day in 1965, two years after its declaration of sovereignty from Britain, Singapore ended a short-lived union with Malaysia and became a fully independent nation.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is a prominent symbol of Singapore’s statehood and identity: the country’s national flag. The flag was designed in 1959 but wasn’t officially adopted until the nation’s official independence six years later. It features two horizontal stripes in Singapore’s national colors of red and white, which respectively stand for universal equality and virtue.
In the flag’s upper hoist corner sits a crescent moon and five stars. The moon, in the early stages of its lunar cycle, represents the development of the nascent Singapore, and the five stars that it cradles symbolize democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.
Happy National Day, Singapore!
