Singapore National Day 2019
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates National Day in Singapore, an island nation at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula that declared independence on this day in 1965.
This year’s National Day celebrations center around the Padang. Spectators attending in person as well as those watching the live broadcast will be treated to a skydiving display, a flyover by the Republic of Singapore Air Force, and a parade including members of the armed forces, the police, civil defense, labor unions, and business leaders. Students, Scouts, and Girl Guides have their own parade with red and white flags fluttering, as shown in today’s Doodle. The red stripe in Singapore’s flag symbolizes universal brotherhood and the white stripe symbolizes purity. The crescent represents the nation’s growth and the stars stand for democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.
The parade is followed by a musical show, and the evening culminates with a dazzling fireworks display accompanied by the singing of the National Anthem.
Happy National Day, Singapore!
