This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today is Russia Day, a work-free occasion for residents of the biggest country in the world. Celebrated since 2002, today is when many Russians return to their hometowns, visit their dacha or summer house, and simply journey out into the country.
Many Russians will spend the day visiting national landmarks like the ones depicted in today’s Doodle. Roadtrippers can traverse the Russky Bridge, one of the world’s longest, with its immense cables connecting Russky Island with Vladivostok.
The Ministry of Agriculture building in Tatarstan, with its enormous iron tree sculpture that stands several stories tall. The tree symbolizes Russian values like sturdiness and hard work — as well as the dense forests that stretch out to the East of this Eurasian country.
Over 45 percent of Russia’s land mass—over 8 million square kilometers—is covered by forest. No wonder so many Russian families enjoy picnics on Russia Day, packing the basket with black bread, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers, with some freshly picked berries for dessert.
