Republic Day Italy 2018
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates the 72nd anniversary of the referendum that transitioned Italy from a monarchy to a republic. Festa della Repubblica, as it is known in Italy, is celebrated every year with a military parade in Rome, which is presided over by the President of Italy.
The most spectacular festivities occur in the capital of Rome where the military celebrations begin early in the morning and often culminate with a display by the Frecce Tricolori (the Tricolor Arrows). The acrobatic division of the Italian Air Force soars over the Monument to Vittorio Emmaneule II, emitting smoke in the form and color of the Italian flag. The monument is also the location of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where every year a wreath is laid honoring all unknown soldiers who have fallen.
