Poland National Day 2016
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today is Poland’s Independence Day, commemorating the anniversary of the country’s independence and those who fought for its freedom. Poland won its sovereignty in 1918, following 123 years of partition by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Habsburg Empire. Thousands honor the occasion by attending parades, special masses, and concerts. Warsaw is the heart of the festivities, hosting a Race of Independence, a changing of the guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and other events. Since Independence Day is an official public holiday, people have the day off school and work to take part in the celebration.
