Poland Independence Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle commemorates Poland’s Independence Day on the anniversary of the date in 1918 when the European nation reclaimed its independence after over a century of partitioned rule. November 11 was first observed as a celebration of Polish independence the following year, and the date gained official recognition as a national holiday in 1937.
Depicted in today’s Doodle is the horizontally-striped Polish flag, which was officially adopted in its current form in 1980. Poland’s usage of red and white traces back as far as the 13th century, when the colors were employed on the country’s earliest documented coat of arms.
Happy Independence Day, Poland!
