Paraguay Independence Day 2018
This Doodle’s Key Themes
May 15th is Independence Day in Paraguay, marking the nation’s separation from Spain in 1811. The whole country turns out to celebrate, with the biggest parade in the capital, Asunción. It’s not uncommon to see traditional straw hats, fajas (sashes), and rebozos (shawls).
Family and friends gather to spend the day together, which often involves barbeques, fútbol matches, and general revelry. One traditional dish that may be served is Sopa Paraguay, which is not only named for the country, but is a special treat for many citizens.
Today’s Doodle features the waving Paraguay flag, with its tri-band of red, white, and blue. There’s also something extra special to note: it’s one of the only national flags in the world with a different design on each side! The front (obverse) shows the national coat of arms, while the back (reverse) shows the seal of the treasury.
¡Feliz día de la independencia, Paraguay!
