Norway Constitution Day 2024
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Norway Constitution Day, locally known as Syttende Mai. On this day in 1814, the Norwegian Constituent Assembly gathered in Eidsvoll and signed the Constitution, one of the oldest in the world.
People have celebrated Norway’s national day since 1836. Many start the day with others over a delectable breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh bread, smoked salmon, and a glass of champagne. Groups also gather at memorials and cemeteries where wreath-laying ceremonies are held in honor of past Norwegians who made the country what it is today.
May 17th is also Children’s Day, so annual celebrations often focus on the nation’s youth. In every area of the country, marching bands, baton twirlers, and schoolchildren parade through the streets. Many people dress in bunad (traditional clothing) or wave the red, navy blue, and white flag like the one seen in today’s Doodle.
Happy Constitution (and Children’s) Day, Norway!
