About Nigeria Independence Day
This annual Doodle celebrates Nigerian Independence Day. On this day in 1960, Nigeria gained its freedom after more than a century under foreign rule. The country’s first prime minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, also made his famous speech at the Lagos Race Course to announce independence on the same day.
Today, Nigerian citizens attend exciting parades and cultural ceremonies to commemorate their nation’s progress and achievements. Families gather to throw parties with delicious food, such as jollof rice and suya (grilled skewers), and traditional music to enjoy a leisurely day with loved ones. Cities from Lagos to Maiduguri also decorate their streets with the green-and-white national flag, just like the one flying high in today’s artwork.
