Nicaragua Independence Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Nicaragua’s Independence Day. On this date in 1821, the country–along with present-day Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras–declared autonomy from Spain with the adoption of the Act of Independence of Central America. The five countries went on to form the Federal Republic of Central America, and following Nicaragua’s secession from the federation the nation gained complete sovereignty in 1838.
Today’s Doodle depicts Nicaragua’s blue-and-white-striped flag, at the center of which sits the country’s highly symbolic coat of arms. The red Phrygian cap represents Nicaragua’s hard-earned liberty, and the rainbow above it signifies the nation’s shining future. Below lie five volcanoes—prominent geological staples of the region—which represents the five nations of the Federal Republic of Central America.
¡Feliz Día de Independencia, Nicaragua!
