National Liberation Day of Korea 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates National Liberation Day of Korea, observed each year on the date in 1945 when the Korean Peninsula separated from Japanese rule. Three years later, the same date marked the re-establishment of an independent South Korea.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the South Korean flag, the basics of which were first designed in 1882. At the center of the flag is the circular t’aegŭk, derived from the ancient philosophy of yin and yang. The red represents positive forces and the blue negative, but together in the t’aegŭk these intertwined sections symbolize duality and universal balance. Surrounding the circle are four trigrams that together signify flux and growth in its many forms, from the four seasons to the cardinal directions.
Happy National Liberation Day, Korea!
