About the Mid-Autumn 2024 Doodle
This Doodle celebrates the Mid-Autumn Festival, also called Tết Trung Thu in Vietnam and Chuseok in South Korea. The holiday has been celebrated since the 10th century B.C.E. and always falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, during the harvest moon.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated in many regions, including China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. Since ancient times, people have celebrated under a moonlit sky and shared offerings like melons, pomegranates, and sweet baked goods.
While celebrations today differ by region, some commonalities tie everyone together. A central treat of the festival is moon cakes which are often given as gifts and are featured in the Doodle artwork! Usually round and shaped like a full moon, these snacks can be either sweet or savory, with a variety of fillings like lotus seed paste, salted egg yolk, fruit, or custard. Colorful lanterns are another staple of the Moon Festival. At night, homes and businesses are lit up with them and some lanterns can even be seen floating across bodies of water.
Happy Mid-Autumn Festival to all! 🏮
