About the Mexico Independence Day 2024 Doodle
This Doodle celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day! On this day in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo rang the bells in the town of Dolores and gave an uplifting speech calling for the end of foreign rule. His cry was heard throughout the nation, and this momentous event started the movement for independence. The Doodle artwork was illustrated by Tijuana-based guest artist, Charles Glaubitz, and depicts the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes. Legend has it that these majestic peaks are not mere geological formations, but the very essence of two lovers, forever entwined. Popocatepetl's frequent eruptions are said to be his heart's fiery sighs, a testament to his enduring love and the unending ache of his loss for Iztaccihuatl.
On Independence Day, Hidalgo’s rally — called the Grito de Dolores (or Cry of Dolores) — is remembered for its historic call to action and overwhelming support from his fellow Mexicans. The fight for freedom lasted eleven years and eleven days, eventually ending in October of 1821 when the Declaration of Independence of the Mexican Empire was drafted and signed.
Citizens partake in Independence celebrations all month, known as Mes de la Patria (Month of the Homeland). Lively parades with colorful floats, street fairs filled with delicious foods, and firework shows that light up the night sky are enjoyed throughout the country. Folk dance performances invite all to show off their moves while onlookers treat themselves to mouthwatering dishes like Chiles en Nogada and pozole. Many also attend a traditional reenactment of el Grito de Dolores at the National Palace in Mexico City.
