Mexico Independence Day 2020

Today’s Doodle, illustrated by Xalapa, Mexico-based guest artist Ina Hristova, celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day. On this day in 1810, Mexico’s decade-long struggle for independence from Spanish rule began, and the country’s sovereignty was officially recognized by Spain on August 24, 1821. 

Depicted in today’s Doodle is a colorful and eclectic collection of images that represent traditional Independence Day festivities. These illustrations pay homage to an iconic Mexican folk embroidery style developed in the 1960s by the Indigenous Otomí people of Tenango de Doria in central Mexico. The shape of the Doodle artwork is inspired by the central Mexican folk sculptures called “Árboles de la Vida” (“Trees of Life”).

Guest Artist Q&A with Ina Hristova

Today’s Doodle was illustrated by Xalapa, Mexico-based guest artist Ina Hristova. Below, she shares her thoughts behind the making of this Doodle:

Q: What were your first thoughts when you were approached about the project?

A: Honestly, I knew that it would be challenging to draw a Doodle for this topic. I felt a sense of responsibility and knew I needed to create an image that depicts what I feel about Mexico, and give a sense of magic and joy!

Q: Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle?

A: I decided to reflect the concept of being together. My main inspiration was “El árbol de la vida” or “The tree of life”— a craft that depicts vital images and is a metaphor for the creation and the connection between people and their land. The Doodle also includes different figures from Mexican crafts such as animals from Tenango embroidery.

Q: What do you hope people take away from your Doodle?

A: Given the times we are living in, I hope to bring some joy to all Mexicans in their homes and it is my way to shout loud ¡VIVA MÉXICO!
