Lithuania Independence Day 2024
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates the first of Lithuania’s two Independence Days: the Restoration of the State Day. On this day in 1918, the Council of Lithuania signed the Act of Independence, which officially ended Soviet rule. Today, Lithuanians honor those who struggled and persevered to help them become a sovereign nation.
Independence Day kicks off with festivities in the capital Vilnius. Lithuanians gather for flag-hoisting ceremonies where they sport the country’s national colors. Yellow, green, and red decorate buildings and homes — just like the flag in today’s Doodle.
Later in the day, loved ones celebrate by enjoying national dishes. Popular choices include delicacies like cepelinai potato dumplings and sakotis — a split cake with a hollow inside.
Happy Independence Day, Lithuania!
