Latvia Independence Day 2024
Today’s Doodle celebrates Latvia’s Independence Day. On this day in 1918, the People’s Council of Latvia gathered in Riga and declared independence from German and Russian occupation.
Observances begin with a flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument. Shortly after, a large military parade marches through the capital city, complete with a plane spraying crimson and red smoke, resembling the Latvian flag, like the one waving in today’s Doodle.
Patriotic concerts, speeches by government officials, and light shows follow. People snack on the national dessert of Latvia, Rupjmaizes kārtojums, a layered treat of rye bread, cream, and fruit. Over 10,000 people partake in a torchlight procession, one of the oldest traditions on Independence Day. To conclude the festivities, fireworks burst in the night sky.
Happy Latvijas Republikas proklamēšanas diena!
