Kazakhstan Independence Day 2023
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Kazakhstan Independence Day. After decades of Soviet rule, the country won its freedom on this day in 1991.
The name Kazakh, which means "wanderer," evokes the nation’s nomadic history and its people’s deep love for freedom. In fact, more than 130 distinct ethnic groups call Kazakhstan home and the holiday offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the country's rich and diverse heritage.
As pictured in today’s artwork, the Kazakh flag flies proudly throughout the nation. The light blue flag, a symbol of the vast skies that nomadic tribes have traditionally lived under, is adorned with a classic golden Kazakh motif, sun, and eagle.
Independence Day officially begins on December 16th and festivities extend into the following day as locals continue to enjoy picturesque yurts and authentic delicacies such as fermented dairy drinks and tandyr nan bread.
Happy Independence Day, Kazakhstan!
