Jordan Independence Day 2019
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Jordan’s Independence Day, also known as Eid al-Istiklaal. A relatively young nation in an ancient land, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan commemorates its independence from British rule on this day.
The Jordanian flag can be seen flying throughout the country (as well as in today’s Doodle), with each color symbolizing a different aspect of the nation’s history. The black band represents the Arab Abbasid dynasties; the white band represents the Umayyad dynasties; the green band represents the Fatimid dynasties; the crimson triangle represents the Hashemite dynasty. The seven-pointed Islamic star represents the seven verses of Surah Al-Fatiha in the Qur’an.
In the capital city of Amman, parades and fireworks mark the occasion.
Happy Independence Day 2019, Jordan!
