Independence Day of Republic of Moldova 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates the Independence Day of the Republic of Moldova. On this day in 1991 in the capital city of Chisinau, the Eastern European republic was declared a sovereign nation after over five decades of Soviet rule.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the blue, yellow, and red tricolor flag of Moldova. The flag was officially adopted in 1990, but the origins of its designs stretch back centuries to the medieval times.
The coat of arms found at the flag’s center features an eagle holding a golden sceptre in one claw and in the other an olive branch which represents peace. A shield that sits on the eagle’s breast depicts the head of an auroch, a prehistoric wild ox that used to roam the European landscape and today serves as Moldova’s national symbol.
Happy Independence Day, Moldova!
