Iceland National Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Iceland National Day, which occurs on this day each year to remember the founding of the Republic of Iceland in 1944.
June 17th has long been an important date for the island nation, as it coincides with the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson, a leader of Iceland’s 19th-century independence movement. A legendary figure in the country’s history, Jón Sigurðsson influenced the passing of the Constitutional Act of 1874, legislation which provided much of the framework for the current Icelandic constitution.
Featured in the Doodle artwork, the blue, white and red of the Icelandic flag flutters with pride across the country and is often painted on children’s faces.
Happy National Day, Iceland!
