Hungary National Day 2024
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Hungary's National Day, commonly called Revolution Day. On this day in 1848, poet Sándor Petőfi joined a group of patriots at the Hungarian National Museum and recited the 12 Points of the Pest Revolution, a list of democratic demands. This list remains one of Hungary’s most important texts, and it called for things like religious freedom, equal legal representation, the right to a free press, and equal taxation.
The people’s passion for the ideals of the 12 Points led to the Hungarian Revolution for independence and the appointment of the nation’s first prime minister. This milestone revolution demonstrated the power of a united people, and Hungarians today remain inspired by these nationalists who fought for a brighter future.
The Hungarian National Museum remains the place to be on National Day. People recite the Nemzeti dal (National Song), local officials give speeches, and wreaths are laid at memorials dedicated to revolutionaries. Many honor those who came before them by wearing a kokárda. Patriots have long worn these ribbons of red, white, and green — the colors on the flags that wave throughout the nation and in today's Doodle.
Happy Revolution Day, Hungary!
