Girl's Day 2016
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Every year on Hinamatsuri, or Girl’s Day, Japan pauses to wish its next generation of women good health and prosperity. Platforms lined with red velvet display intricately decorated dolls modeled after the opulently dressed emperors and empresses who ruled Japan centuries ago.
To celebrate this tradition, artist Nate Swinehart--who drew on his time in Japan for inspiration--created a Doodle featuring a pair of these historic dolls wearing their finest courtly attire.
