Ghana Independence Day 2017
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Apart from its deep forests, diverse animal species, and sunny beaches, Ghana enjoys a rich history as the first black African country south of the Sahara to achieve independence from colonial rule. Its nationalist and Pan-African leader, Kwame Nkrumah, said, “Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent.”
Over 30 other African countries eventually gained their own independence in the decade following Ghana’s liberation.
Today, on the anniversary of its independence, we celebrate this culturally rich, unique nation.
Happy National Day, Ghana!
