Georgia Independence Day 2018
May 26th, 2018 marks the 100-year anniversary of the date Georgia declared independence from Russia and created the Democratic Republic of Georgia. Although a constituent of the USSR from 1922-1991, the country became a sovereign nation once again in 1991.
Georgians will celebrate in their capital of Tbilisi and other regional cities, with lively parades, concerts, and exhibit
ions. Most recently, in 2017, Georgia’s Independence Day celebrations saw country-wide activities centered around the important 12th century Georgian poet, Shota Rustaveli, who was born on the same day in 1172.
Happy Independence Day, Georgia!
