Finland Independence Day 2023
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Finland’s Independence Day, a time for both festivities and solemn remembrance. On this day in 1917, the Finnish Parliament adopted the newly created Declaration of Independence and freed itself from the Russian Empire.
Finland’s flag rises in the morning and can be seen across the country. Its colors of white and blue appear on decorations, pastries, and of course today’s Doodle. To honor the Finns before them who brought the country to freedom, people often lay wreaths at war memorials or graves. Others watch The Unknown Soldier to learn about the Second World War or attend a military parade that marches through Helsinki, complete with a flyover by the Air Force.
In the evening, many windows will be glowing from two candles. Several million will turn on the TV for the Independence Day Reception in the capital and hope to see their favorite public figure shake hands with the president.
Happy Independence Day, Finland!
