El Salvador Independence Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
In honor of close to two centuries of El Salvadoran autonomy from Spain, today’s Doodle celebrates the nation’s Independence Day. On this day in 1821, El Salvador–along with Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua–declared its independence with the adoption of the Act of Independence of Central America. The five countries joined to form the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823, and following its dissolution El Salvador became a fully sovereign nation in 1841.
Illustrated in today’s Doodle is El Salvador’s blue-and-white-striped flag with the country’s highly symbolic coat of arms in the center. The nation’s date of independence, September 15th, 1821, surrounds a red Phrygian cap, a representation of El Salvador’s hard-earned liberty. Below are five volcanoes, each of which stands for one of the five states of the Federal Republic of Central America.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia, El Salvador!
