Ecuador National Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Ecuador’s National Day in commemoration of the date in 1809 when residents of the now capital city of Quito began their struggle for freedom from Spanish rule. This day is remembered throughout the country as the first step on the nation’s path toward independence, which arrived more than a decade later.
Many Ecuadorians celebrate National Day with traditional song and dance, costumes, and local foods like the fritada de chancho, or pork fry, which originated in Quito’s home region of the Sierra highlands.
Illustrated in the Doodle artwork is the Ecuadorian flag, which today is hoisted high across the South American nation. Adopted in 1860, the flag features unequal horizontal stripes of yellow, blue, and red with the country’s coat of arms at its center. The coat of arms is topped by the powerful Andean condor, the national bird of Ecuador, and represents the natural beauty of the South American country with its depiction of Mount Chimborazo behind the Guayas River.
iFeliz Día de la Independencia, Ecuador!
