Ecuador Independence Day 2018
This Doodle’s Key Themes
High in the Andean foothills, on a foundation of ancient Incan ruins, Ecuador’s capital city of Quito stands near two active volcanoes and just 200 kilometers south of the equator. Every year on August 10, Quito, the cradle of Ecuador’s independence movement, comes alive with celebrations commemorating the day in 1809 when citizens of Quito demanded "equality and autonomy” in an event known as El Primer Grito de la Independencia (“the first shout of independence.”)
All across Ecuador fiestas, fairs and military parades take place, with the largest and most colorful in Quito. Bands will play Pasillo music as dancers perform in traditional costumes and fireworks light up the night sky above the Plaza de la Independencia and the Palacio de Gobierno. Above the street fairs full of empanadas, skewers of grilled meats, and corn on the cob with ice cream, the flag seen in today’s Doodle will fly, with the Andean condor proudly perched on the Ecuadorian coat of arms.
¡Feliz Día de la Independencia!
