Dominican Republic Independence Day 2018
This Doodle’s Key Themes
174 years ago, the Dominican Republic declared independence, and today’s Doodle celebrates the anniversary of this historic date and the victory that led to statehood for this island nation. For the entire month of February, Dominicans celebrate the resilient spirit and rich culture of their country. Many towns send their representatives to La Vega, a city at the center of Dominican history from centuries ago. The celebrations culminate in Carnival, which is rung in on Feb 27th with a festive parade.
The day is ushered in with special foods such as mangu, a plantain mash topped with red pickled onions, as well as costumes from different towns. The nation’s white, red, and blue flag is proudly on display as Dominicans partake in one of the biggest parades around the island nation.
¡Feliz día de independencia!
