Djibouti Independence Day 2024
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Djibouti Independence Day. On this day in 1977, the East African country officially declared its freedom, ending nearly a hundred years of French rule.
Many people flock to the country’s capital, Djibouti City, to join in on festivities like fireworks, fairs and traditional musical performances. The National Army led by a colorful marching band create a parade to celebrate the National Day which is followed by government officials giving speeches at the Presidential Palace. After the celebrations, families might feast on traditional meals like Skudahkhrais (Djiboutian lamb stew).
Today, Djibouti’s national flag flies on homes and buildings, just like the one in today’s Doodle. The tricolored flag features a blue stripe that represents the sea and sky, a green stripe that stands for prosperity, and a white stripe that symbolizes peace. Alongside that, the triangle standing for equality while the red star portrays independence.
Happy Independence Day, Djibouti
