About Celebrating Silverstone
This Doodle celebrates the iconic Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom. Rich with history and prestige, this British racing track is home to some of the most anticipated motorsports events in the world — like the F1 Grand Prix taking place today!
Originally built as an air force base during World War II, Silverstone was repurposed into a race track in 1947 when a group of friends hosted an impromptu race at the abandoned airfield. Just three years later in 1950, Silverstone was home to the first ever F1 Grand Prix (this year marks the 75th anniversary). Silverstone became a permanent fixture for the most premier form of motorsport in its 1987 season, and now attracts hundreds of thousands of fans each year.
From the starting grid on Hamilton Straight to the wide right-hander at turn 15, Silverstone produces some of racing’s most memorable moments because of its notorious corners and flat-out straights. Overtaking opportunities are abundant down Wellington and Hangar, and the bend at Copse can produce over 5 Gs (or roughly 5 times the driver’s body weight) when taken at full speed. The Maggots, Becketts, and Chapel sequence is also considered one of the most challenging in the world, demanding spot-on precision and immense courage while driving at the very limit.
When the chequered flag waves after 52 laps, who will finish P1 and stand on the top step of the podium? Good luck to all the teams and drivers!
