Special thanks to Ribeiro estate, for their collaboration on this project. Below Marsha, Ribeiro’s daughter, shares her thoughts on today’s Doodle and Ribeiro’s legacy.
I could not be more thrilled that Google is honouring my father - the Indian-born Expressionist painter, Lancelot Ribeiro (1933-2010) – with this Doodle on the day that would have been his 91st birthday.
Innately experimental, ever-inventive, my father always derived pleasure seeing anyone appreciate his work – including me. This was even more so when his work produced surprising artistic effects. He would show a quiet pride whenever his work was admired and left people puzzled over how such unusual effects could have been produced. And so to know that his creativity is being recognised on such a widely-used platform by audiences worldwide would have left him speechless and immensely proud.
In a year where his work is now being appreciated across the UK, India and the United States, my hope is that my father’s unique legacy, marked by this Google Doodle, will be amplified. I have no doubt that this will bring new eyes to his work and inspire others to follow in his footsteps: refusing to be branded, breaking new boundaries - technically and compositionally - and living purely for his art, and the art alone.
My hope is that this Doodle, in acknowledging his standing as a painter of international stature, will ensure Ribeiro continues to inspire, delight and surprise audiences for generations to come.
