About the James Baldwin Doodle

A Word from the James Baldwin Estate

Special thanks to The Baldwin Family, The James Baldwin Estate, and Trevor Baldwin, for their collaboration on this project. Below Darlene Burnett, Baldwin's niece, shares her thoughts on today’s Doodle and Baldwin’s legacy.

The Baldwin family is grateful for the honor of having our beloved (Brother and Uncle) James Baldwin commemorated with this Doodle in celebration of Black History Month and the centennial anniversary of his life. Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, was often responsible for caring for his brothers and sisters. His love and concern for his younger siblings streamed down to his nieces and nephews who lovingly benefited from his presence.

Jimmy was an avid reader and regular New York Public Library visitor. He spent countless hours probing the bookshelves, building his lexicon of words and knowledge as he absorbed himself between the covers of books. In early adolescence, Jimmy spent time behind the church pulpit as a Pentecostal Preacher before becoming a renowned writer. The strength of his words and keen insight destined his path to becoming a legendary novelist, visionary, and captivating orator.

An active voice in the Civil Rights movement, Jimmy vehemently spoke out against the racial ills of his country. A country that he loved, and openly criticized, but felt forced to leave for the more embracing arms of Europe. Jimmy showed up in the world as himself. He was unapologetic and bold in his speech, his writings, and his sexuality. Whenever he returned home he was embraced by the welcoming arms of his family and the deep maternal love of his mother, Berdis.

His family home on the west side of Manhattan, is a National and State registered landmark. On his visits, it was a gathering place for writers, actors, artists, and musicians. A congregation of creatives. The small brick building bred an energy that embraced all who entered. It was not unusual for his family and friends to be up all hours of the night, laughing, eating, drinking, and rapt in sonorous conversations. Jimmy loved having a good time.

His wide-gapped grin and hearty laughter will forever resonate in our hearts. Decades after his death, it is clear that Jimmy’s extensive body of work holds its impact of eternally breathing into spaces that will be stirred by the gravity of his intellect and acquaint the power of his words for generations to come.
