Cambodia Independence Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Today’s Doodle celebrates Cambodia’s Independence Day, an annual commemoration of the date in 1953 when the nation declared its liberation from French colonial rule.
Depicted in the Doodle artwork is the blue-and-red, horizontally-striped Cambodian flag, which showcases the main building of the nation’s ancient Angkor Wat temple complex. Once the capital of Cambodia's ancient Khmer empire, Angkor Wat–which translates to “temple city”–is a remarkable feat of architecture found just miles outside the city of Siem Reap. The temple is just one of the historic structures situated in the roughly 400-square-kilometer Angkor Archaeological Park, which is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and widely heralded as one of Southeast Asia’s most treasured sites.
Happy Independence Day, Cambodia!
