Cambodia Independence Day 2017
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Flags flapping against the brilliant blue sky is a sight you’re likely to see in Cambodia on this important day in the country’s history. Nearly everyone festoons their home with the blue, red, and white banner in honor of Cambodia Independence Day, which commemorates Cambodia gaining independence in 1953 after being a French protectorate for nearly a century.
On November 9th, festivities take place throughout the country, but the biggest celebrations unfold in its capital, Phnom Penh. Here, the King, Prime Minister, and government officials kick off the national holiday with a ceremony at the Independence Monument, a lotus-shaped memorial near the center of the city. Colorful balloons fill the sky, and a parade proceeds from the Royal Palace. Later, fireworks sparkle above the city, and many buildings, including the Royal Palace, remain lit up.
Today’s Doodle honors Cambodia’s 64th year of independence with the country’s iconic flying flag.
