Bulgaria Liberation Day 2020
This Doodle’s Key Themes
On this day in 1878, the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano established the modern Bulgarian state. Recognized as Bulgarian Liberation Day, March 3rd marks the day that the nation became an autonomous republic.
Declared a national holiday in 1978, Liberation Day is widely revered as one of the most significant times in the country’s history. In remembrance of Bulgarian sacrifice, traditional ceremonies that include street parades and concerts salute cultural heritage. In the capital of Sofia, speeches from political dignitaries, memorial services, and solemn displays of fireworks commemorate those who dedicated their lives to their nation’s sovereignty.
Today’s Doodle features the Bulgarian flag in honor of its freedom. The three stripes of white, green, and red symbolize peace, the fertile soil the country has grown from, and the courage of its citizens, respectively.
Честит Ден на освобождението, България! (Happy Liberation Day, Bulgaria!)
