Bosnia & Herzegovina Statehood Day 2023
Today’s Doodle celebrates Bosnia and Herzegovina on its Statehood Day. On this day in 1943, the first session of the Anti-Fascist Council for the National Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was held. This event re-established the nation’s statehood and declared equality for everyone in the nation.
The Bosnian and Herzegovinian flag, like the one waving in today’s Doodle, is raised to kick off the holiday. The country has a very diverse population, so its design intentionally omits religious, political, and ethnicity symbols. Instead, its blue, white, and yellow colors convey peace and neutrality.
Festivities take place across the country, but the largest are in Sarajevo, the capital. People lay flowers at memorials like the Vječna Vatra (Eternal Flame) to honor those who championed freedom. And throughout the day, music, theater, and dance performances showcase the state’s beautiful folklore and culture.
Happy Statehood Day, Bosnia and Herzegovina!
