Bahrain National Day 2019
This Doodle’s Key Themes
Celebrating 58 years since the country’s first emir, Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, ascended to the throne, today’s Doodle honors the Kingdom of Bahrain’s National Day.
The island nation of Bahrain is nestled between Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the Persian Gulf. This sovereign nation’s name is derived from the Arabic al-bahrayn, which loosely translates to “two seas,” a reference to the country's surrounding coastal seabed where freshwater springs rise up from the depths to meet the briny ocean water.
Once the capital of the ancient Dilmun civilization, this small island nation has a rich heritage that stretches back to the third millennium BCE. Commonly referred to as the “Pearl of the Gulf,” Bahrain commemorates over 6,000 years of history with two days of events including fireworks, vibrant decorations, and cultural parades filled with song and dance.
Happy National Day, Bahrain!
